Fire Chief Janet Sikes has the distinction of being Michigan's only female fire chief and is one of fifteen women leading fire departments in the United States. She was a paid on call firefighter for Woodhaven for 11 years, working her way up the ranks to Deputy Chief before being named Chief 10 years ago.
Before joining the Fire Department, her career included working at the Chrysler Trenton Engine Plant for 10 years and then operating a pre and post-natal teen pregnancy and nutrition program for five years with the Wayne County Intermediate School District.
In addition to her role as fire chief, she is a licensed paramedic, a 23 year Red Cross Volunteer, a radiological officer for Southeastern Wayne County, a firefighter and a fire officer instructor with the state of Michigan.
The Woodhaven Fire Department provides the citizens with the latest equipment and firefighter training available to better serve its community. Responding to fires, hazardous material incidents, medical emergencies, and much more. The Woodhaven Fire Department provides three ambulances, which will transport patients to any of the three area hospitals with a simple call to 911. The firefighter's medical licenses include Paramedics, Emergency Medical Specialists, and Emergency Medical Technicians. These Fire Fighters show great pride and professionalism, as all employees of the Woodhaven Fire Department are residents of the City of Woodhaven.
With a fleet of four Pierce fire apparatus the response capabilities for the City's fire protection are a 75 ft. ladder, and a 55 ft. Snorkel Squirt Engine, and a Mobil Air/light trailer located at Fire Station 1 on Hall Rd. and two Pierce Engines at Fire Station 2, located on Van Horn Rd. Both Stations Engines also carry the latest Hurst Jaws of life for quick extrication capabilities at the time of need. The Woodhaven Fire Department is a Combination Fire Department with twenty-five to thirty Paid on Call Firefighters/Medics and 6 Full-time Firefighter/Medics.
