Woodhaven has an active senior citizen contingent. Their group covers many interests from social pursuits, recreation activities, volunteer work, to health and legal information.
Amy Thomas is the Senior Coordinator in charge of overseeing that the senior citizens of Woodhaven get the attention that they need and deserve.
The senior club in Woodhaven has members from the age of 55 and up. They meet twice a month for meetings, one includes a social dinner and the other is for business. The group also has a very charitable group call the Crafty Ladies that provide lap blankets to those in need at hospitals and nursing homes and for the Wayne County Baby Shower. Another group comes in each Tuesday for BINGO and other card games to keep their minds active and get out of their homes for just a few hours.
Besides games in the Community Center, the Woodhaven senior citizens provide a good sized attendance at the Downriver Senior Olympics, competing in nearly all of the 23 events that take place over a week in the hot summer sun. They travel with the City bus to various historic, entertaining and accessible trips throughout the year, like the Detroit Institute of Arts, shopping at Summit Place Mall or Birch Run and the Frederik Meijers Sculpture Garden in Grand Rapids. The seniors are also welcome to join the lunch bunch that goes to a different restaurant each month.
While there is always attention paid to fun, there is also a focus in keeping seniors healthy. They can take advantage of free blood pressure screening each month. The "File of Life" program is encourage by all senior residents of Woodhaven and there is now a food pantry supplied with basic essential foods for those who are in need in our city. The seniors can also utilize the Woodhaven on Wheels transportation for doctor appointments, banking and shopping.
Anyone who needs information about the senior services can call Amy at 675-4926 and any requests for additional services are accepted.
